  • Anecdote*: Alcoholism I was just reading about Donald Maxwell and thought you'd be
interested to know that in the 1960's I met him.

Thomas Earle Maxwell (Uncle Earle to me because my husband, Warwick
was his nephew) was a Salvation Army Officer and managed The People's
Palace in Pitt Street, Sydney. I was his secretary.
Donald Maxwell came in wanting a room. He was given a room and when
Uncle Earle found out his name was Maxwell, was curious because he
knew that he had an Uncle Donald. It turned out to be his Uncle Donald.

Donald was very dishevelled and had been drinking. It turned out that
he was an alcoholic and Uncle Earle gave him a good meal and got him
to have a shower and provided new clothes for him. It's a long time
ago and I'm trying to think of everything that happened. I'm pretty
sure Uncle Earle tried to get Donald into a Salvation Army
rehabilitation place, and Earle had contact with him for quite a few
months. I have a memory of him being a good singer and touring New
Zealand in his earlier years. He eventually died and Uncle Earle did
the funeral. I think there were only a few people there.
  • Anecdote: From 'The Cattle Industry on The Clarence' - page 49 - refers to Donald N. as being a 'smaller agent' ?(stock & station agent)?.

From 'The History of Coutts Crossing & Nymboida Districts' Vol 3 - page 135
    'Mr Cyril Herborn, who has lived in the Kangaroo Creek Valley for the last seventy years, knew most of the Maxwells well and had this to say;
Kenny Maxwell was an auctioneer, likewise Farquhar at Maclean for a few years. Kenny was also the first Nymboida Shire Council President. Thomas too served as a councilor, George Maxwell sat on the committees of the Grafton Dairy Co-op and the Show Society, while Donald was an early President of the Clarence County Council ?(Nymboida Electric Power Supply)?.'

    Note from Lynne Bone:

Jean told me something about him regarding her wedding. I think he
offered to sing, then didn't turn up ?? - She said he had a beautiful
    voice.

What has also got me curious is Jean said his daughter Muriel Marjorie
( Peggy) who married Albert Pfaltzgraff was killed in Hawaii in a car
crash returning from farewelling Albert off on a ship - he was a
sailor...........Now I must ask Jean at the weekend but I assumed that
this happened shortly after they were married and that they had no
issue - but you will read in Peter's notes in the Newspaper article on
U Donald's wife Frances, that she had a visit of 3 generations of her
grandchildren from Hawaii .......I wonder if Peggy had family ??
