This is Mick's maternal grandfather, Private 6578 Thomas Johnson, in the uniform of the Scots Guards. Tom died, with most of his battalion, on 11 November 1914 during the Battle of Nonne Boschen, near Ieper. Like so many, he lies in an unknown and unmarked grave, and is remembered on the Menin Gate at Ieper. Family history research has enabled Mick to find his mum's cousins, Margaret and Jean, who have become a wonderful source of friendship, Jean has even given Mick one of Tom's medals.
